Thrifty DIY Fun: How to Set Up Your Own Neighborhood Tool Share In-Person / Online

September is National Preparedness Month, so join us to learn how to share beyond the CML Library of Things, and learn how to build your own types of community sharing networks.  Discover how your neighborhood can become a hub of shared resources! This interactive program is designed to help community groups and individuals learn how to share tools, equipment, and everyday items responsibly—extending the spirit of the Library of Things into homes, schools, clubs, and local networks.

We’ll explore:

  • What Makes a Good Lending Item: From board games to blenders, learn which items are great for sharing—and which are better kept personal.

  • Tool & Item Hierarchy: Understand the difference between frequently-used essentials, specialty tools, one-time-use items, and high-risk or hard-to-maintain equipment.

  • Best Practices for Lending & Borrowing: Tips on labeling, tracking, care agreements, and how to build trust within your sharing circle.

  • Starting a Sharing Network: Learn how to map local resources, create a borrowing system (paper or digital), and connect with neighbors to grow your own community library.

We'll also share success stories and resources to help you start or strengthen a local sharing initiative. Whether you're part of a community group, neighborhood association, school, or just a passionate individual—this session is for you!
