Hope and Possibilities: TAPE ART Temporary Installation on the Outside of Curtis Library Buildings

Hope and Possibilities: TAPE ART Temporary Installation on the Outside of Curtis Library Buildings In-Person

Providence-based artists Leah Smith and Michael Townsend are members of a street art crew that has been making temporary murals out of tape on walls around the world for over 30 years.

Yes, tape!

The special tape used is ideal for shaping and safe for applying to stone, brick and glass — leaving no residue or marking on the buildings that become their temporary canvas, such as the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis (pictured above), Ground Zero, and locations in Japan, Germany, China and more.

Leah's late grandfather, Romain B. Savoie, former Brunswick Assistant Postmaster, was an avid reader and long-time patron at Curtis. "I am excited to be making art in a town that I have many childhood memories of and on a building that had a profound impact on my grandfather's life.

Please stop by to visit with us, ask questions and watch as the artwork unfolds."

The ideas and design for the mural on the side of Curtis Library will develop in real time as the artists draw from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

PHYSICALLY-DISTANT VIEWING AREAS will be set up at the Middle Street entrance to encourage spectators to stop by to watch the artists, ask them questions (they LOVE questions) and see the mural come to life before your eyes!

This project is funded in part by a grant from the Maine 200 Bicentennial Commission, and will partially take place during the Brunswick Downtown Association’s Second Friday Art Walk.
