Films in February: Purple Mountain Panel Discussion Online

Join us for a discussion of the film Purple Mountains (purplemountainsfilm.com) hosted by the Bath-Brunswick Chapter of Citizen's Climate Lobby. Watch the film online https://www.purplemountainsfilm.com/, *** then attend the discussion on February 23rd on Zoom by registering here.

PLEASE NOTE:

Recently Purple Mountains seems to have changed their urls to encourage you to purchase their film on a number of platforms. When we originally set this up this film was free to watch online, and it does still seem to be free here: https://www.purplemountainsfilm.com/watchnow . We do not know how long this will remain free to view, but as soon as we are able to purchase the DVD for the library we will also do so. At present it is only availiable on these services. We had enquired about screenings but have yet to hear back. Regardless of this kerfuffle we look forward to a very informative discussion and gathering!

Distinguished panelists include:

Mark Battle is a Professor of Physics at Bowdoin College, where he came after working at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography and Princeton University.  His research addresses questions about the composition of the earth’s atmosphere in the present, future and recent past.  An experimentalist, he has travelled to Antarctica, Greenland and the tropical Pacific to collect samples that help us understand the buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.  His current project involves making measurements at Harvard Forest, in Central Massachusetts.

Chloe Maxmin, hailing from rural Maine, is a Maine State Senator. She was elected in 2020 after unseating a two-term Republican incumbent and (former) Senate Minority Leader. In 2018, she served in the Maine House of Representatives after becoming the first Democrat to win a rural conservative district. Chloe is about a new politics for rural America. She and her campaign manager, Canyon Woodward, are writing a book for Beacon Press on their work.

David Vail  is Professor of Economics emeritus and former director of environmental studies at Bowdoin College. David works with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s Economics Policy Network and is a board member of the Solar Energy Association of Maine and the Chewonki Foundation. He was a founding board member of the Maine Center for Economic Policy and previously chaired the Policy Committee at Coastal Enterprises, Inc.

Rob Wood is the Director of Government Relations and Climate Policy for The Nature Conservancy in Maine, based in Brunswick, ME. His team develops and advocates for laws and regulations that advance TNC’s conservation priorities at the state and federal level. He specializes in climate change mitigation solutions, building support for climate action through stakeholder engagement, community-based demonstration projects and in the Maine State House. Prior to joining TNC, Rob spent three years on the policy team for a state-based education advocacy organization and worked as a field organizer for two political campaigns. He holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Georgetown University.

Purple Mountains is a documentary featuring Jeremy Jones, a graduate of Carrabassett Valley Academy (ME), a North Tahoe local, iconic snowboarder, mountaineer, and founder of Protect Our Winters.  Jeremy makes a strong case for finding common ground with those we think disagree with us about climate change.  Along the way he makes the case for policy, not individual sustainability actions, as the necessary approach to addressing the climate crisis.

Discussion will center around the following questions:

  • Why are we as a country so divided on climate change?
  • How do we find common ground?
  • What effective policies may be acceptable to legislators on both sides?
